About the artist GEORGE BROWELL:

After early retirement from a career in the Printing Industry, I raised my lifelong activity of painting to a higher level by doing a BA (Hons) in Fine Art at Sunderland University.

Then, after a period of developing my painting style and doing some art teaching at evening classes for adults,  I went on to do an MA Fine Art which I completed in 2005.

The main benefit to my painting style that I derived from these degree courses, was in learning how to tap into my inner feelings and subconscious mind - the knowledge that for an artist there are no rules or boundaries and that anything is possible, and that by continuously painting with a free but enquiring and open mind, new discoveries will arise.

The paintings on view on this website are a combination of traditional works, expressionist type paintings, watercolours  and oil paintings from my MA course - plus, (mostly watercolour paintings) in a recent loose style which I am now developing and improving on as I learn.  These are done in a free and energetic way using various mark making techniques, stipples and washes, that appeal to me.  Colour is very important to me and my many years as a colour printer have given me a good understanding of colour relationships which hopefully can be seen in my work.

Most of the paintings on this site are for sale. An average price for framed 20 x 16 inch works is 100 pounds plus p and p.
